Using PayPal for Donations and Payments
You can receive donations via PayPal even if your customers/donors do not have a PayPal account. They can donate or pay via their credit card using PayPal.
To get a PayPal account, Click on the link below to sign up for an account - use this link even if you are a non-profit organization.
If you are a not for profit organization, you will need your EIN and proof of registration.

1. How can PayPal help my organization’s fundraising efforts?As of 4Q2007, PayPal had 141 million account holders. PayPal account holders have over $2 billion in account balances. PayPal balances are often used toward purchases and donations.
2. What are the benefits of accepting PayPal?Accepting PayPal can help your organization:
- Acquire new donors by tapping into the PayPal account base.
- Provide donors with a safe, secure way to donate online, without sharing their financial information.
3. How can I begin to accept PayPal donations?It’s fast and easy-to-do at www.paypal.com:
- Sign up for a PayPal business account. You will need to have your organization’s checking account number.

Create a Donate button.

Add the Donate button to your website.
4. Is there additional documentation that I need to provide to PayPal to confirm my organization’s nonprofit status?You may be asked to supply tax returns or other supporting documentation. You will be contacted by PayPal if additional information is required.
5. How will I receive donations made with PayPal?Donations will appear in your organization’s PayPal account. You can see the donor name, donation amount, and date of the donation within the Transaction Details page.
6. How can I accept donations from donors who don’t have a PayPal account?Donors without a PayPal account can still donate – either by creating an account or paying by credit card on the PayPal website.
7. What can I do with the money that is deposited in my PayPal account?You can spend the balance with merchants who accept PayPal. You can move funds at no charge to your organization’s checking account:
- Log into PayPal.

Go to “My Account” tab.

Select “Withdrawal.”

Select “Transfer Funds to Your Bank Account.”
8. How much does PayPal cost?
PayPal offers new lower transaction fees for nonprofits. Fees are applied only when you accept a contribution. If you don’t receive donations, you don’t pay. You will not be charged setup fees or recurring monthly fees.
Nonprofit transaction fees are 1.9% - 2.2% + $.30 USD; previous rate was 1.9% - 2.9% + $.30 USD. To be eligible, you must have documented 501(c)(3) status or you will not receive the reduced nonprofit transaction fees. This applies to new and existing PayPal accounts.
9. What product is right for my organization?Most nonprofits with less than $100,000 in annual income choose to use the Donate button, which is fast and easy-to-integrate onto your website.

Donors will complete their donations on the PayPal website.

Your organization does not receive the donor’s financial details, such as credit card number, so you are not responsible for protecting this sensitive data.

10. What will my donors see when they donate with PayPal?After clicking the Donate button, the user will be directed to PayPal, where the user will be shown 3 screens:

11. What reports are available to my organization?Your organization may obtain daily reports online within your PayPal account at https://business.paypal.com. These reports are published once each day.
For a real-time view of recent transactions, you can view these online:
- Log in to your PayPal account.

Click the Overview subtab.
You can also print monthly reports online:

Select a month from the dropdown menu.

Click View if one or more statements are available.

12. I’ve heard about the viral PayPal fundraising badges on MySpace and Facebook. What do these badges do?Donors are more likely to give when recommended by a friend. Your supporters can copy your organization’s badge and display it on their pages, blogs, and websites to spread the word about your cause and raise money for your organization.
13. How can my organization obtain these badges?The MySpace fundraising badge is available to nonprofits at www.myspace.com/paypal. Each organization that creates a badge will be reviewed by PayPal, so consumers can be confident that your organization is legitimate. The PayPal fundraising badge on Facebook is viral and targeted at social fundraisers. More details are available on Facebook.
